Exact Imaging introduces first Prostate Risk Identification Protocol (PRI-MUS™) using Micro-Ultrasound Platform
New protocol, aiming to set new standards to facilitate micro-ultrasound-based visualization and stratification of prostate tissue imaging, launches at ESUI 2015 in Barcelona, Spain

BARCELONA, SPAIN and TORONTO, ON-- (November 12, 2015) Exact Imaging (www.exactimaging.com), the world’s leader in high–resolution micro-ultrasound systems enabling real-time imaging and biopsy guidance of the prostate, today introduces PRI-MUS™, the first Prostate Risk Identification Protocol using Micro-Ultrasound. This new protocol, the first of its kind in prostate ultrasound, aims to set a new standard to facilitate micro-ultrasound-based visualization and stratification of prostate tissue imaging and to best instruct real-time targeting of suspicious regions using the micro-ultrasound platform. The new PRI-MUS protocol using the ExactVu™ micro-ultrasound platform, is being introduced at the 4th ESUI (European Association of Urology Section of Urological Imaging) Meeting in Barcelona, Spain on November 12, 2015 where it will be presented as part of the Scientific Sessions as well as in a Scientific Poster Session.

“Due to its limited resolution, the standard-of-care urological ultrasound imaging has been unable to truly visualize and differentiate suspicious regions and consequently has limited our ability to directly target those regions during our prostate biopsy procedures“, says Dr. Christian P. Pavlovich, Associate Professor of Urology and Director, Urologic Oncology at, James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. “With the reality of high resolution micro-ultrasound and now with the PRI-MUS protocol, I believe there are good possibilities for a new standard – one based in high-resolution, practice-based micro-ultrasound imaging coupled with an evidence-based risk identification protocol to allow for the broad-based adoption of this platform”. Dr. Pavlovich, an invited speaker at the ESUI conference, is delivering a clinical talk titled “High resolution micro-ultrasound in urology“ and is also a member of the PRI-MUS clinical advisory board.

“Prostate cancer is a diffuse disease and with the significant increase in spatial resolution enabled by our ExactVu technology, we wanted to develop an evidence-based protocol that would allow urologists to identify sonographic features now visible in prostate tissue, to characterize those features in terms of a standardized risk identification protocol, and then to target those areas that appeared suspicious,” says Randy AuCoin, Exact Imaging’s President and CEO. “This led us, along with the clinical leadership of our PRI-MUS Advisory Group, to develop the PRI-MUS protocol for micro-ultrasound based imaging of the prostate. The protocol is completely evidence-based, having been developed based on retrospective studies referencing over 1,000 micro-ultrasound biopsy images and cine-loops and all validated with clinical pathology“.

The PRI-MUS protocol is also being profiled at the ESUI 2015 conference in a scientific poster (P050), titled “Assessing cancer risk in 29 MHz micro-ultrasound images of the prostate: Creation of the PRIMUS (prostate risk identification using micro-ultrasound) protocol“, the first scientific presentation that describes the development and evidence-based validation of the PRI-MUS protocol.

Exact Imaging would like to acknowledge the significant contribution by its PRI-MUS Clinical Advisory Board towards the development and validation of the protocol:

  • Dr. Sangeet Ghai (PRI-MUS Committee Chair), Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Cancer Clinical Research Unit, Toronto, ON
  • Dr. Christian Pavlovich, Johns Hopkins University, Brady Urological Institute, Baltimore, MD
  • Dr. Gregg R. Eure, Urology of Virginia, Virginia Beach, VA
  • Dr. Vincent Fradet, Urologue-oncologue, Centre de Recherche Clinique et Évaluative en Oncologie (CRCEO), Quebec City, QC
  • Dr. Eric Hyndman, Prostate Cancer Calgary, Calgary, AB

The ExactVu micro-ultrasound system will also be profiled in Booth C1 the Exhibit Hall of the 4th ESUI (European Association of Urology Section of Urological Imaging) Meeting on November 12, 2015 at the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.

About Exact Imaging (formerly Imagistx):

Exact Imaging (www.exactimaging.com) is the world's leader in high-resolution micro-ultrasound systems enabling real-time imaging and guided biopsies in the urological market for prostate cancer. Operating up to 29 MHz, the micro-ultrasound platform enables a whole new level of resolution and with the benefits of ease of use, affordability, and being an extension of the current urological workflow. Using the Exact Imaging platform, urologists will now be able to visualize areas of interest in the prostate and specifically target biopsies at those areas in addition to performing systematic, trans-rectal, ultrasound biopsy protocols. ExactVu™ micro-ultrasound system has CE marking (Certificate #649960) for sale in the European Union. ExactVu™ micro-ultrasound system has CE marking (Certificate #649960) for sale in the European Union. The product is not yet commercially available in the US and Canada.
